Our Reggio Discussions about Natural Disasters

We drew pictures of the effects of cyclones vs earthqukes. Here are the discussions we had with Mrs S about them

Courtney: I’ve drawn the fault line of an earthquake
T: Why have you drawn it the different colours?
C:Blue shows strongest then the brown and white is the least strong.
T: What does the line show?
C: It goes from strong to less strong.
T:What are you going to draw for a cyclone?
C: It coming down to earth.
T: Which one will be stronger
C: The cyclone it will be windy and fast
C:Compared to an earthquake which isn’t very strong.
T: How will we be able to compare them?
C: They will both be lines.

Emily:I’m drawing a cyclone making a crack in the tree and a crack on the ground, that’s what I’m predicting
T:What is the other one showing?
E:The earthquake showing a crack in the road and road closed signs.
T:So you think both cyclones and earthquakes cause cracks in the road?
Yes
How?
Cracks come when the ground cracks during the earthquake and in the cyclone things fall on the ground and make it cracks.
Would they be the same type of crack?
I’m not sure, I don’t think so. I think the earthquake would make big cracks and the cracks from the cyclone would be quite small
Why
Earthquakes are made no not made but they do cause cracks that are big, like at our house at home, we have a big crack and
So the cracks from the earthquake come from wehere?
Plates rubbing togehter
Where are the plates
Underground, when they rub hard against each other one gives away and makes an earthquake and then it doesn’t stop til it finds a new home.
Where does the cyclone crack come from?
Houses and treeds and rocks from the strong winds.
So the damage caused by the cycone is coming from where?
I’m not sure.

Teacher:Why are you drawing a house lochlan?
LochlanI want to draw a house that is damaged by the earthquake and one that is damaged by the cyclone.
How is the strength or power different in each one?
The power of the earthquake cracks windows and the bricks get damaged but it is worse in the cyclone because the power of the cyclone sucks things up and lifts heavier things cause the earthquake doesn’t pick things up it just shakes.

Where can I see the energy in your picture Alex?
In the windows.
What can I see with the windows?
The different types of cracks, the cyclone cracks come from energy in the air and the cracks in the earthquake show small cracks coming from the floor.
So there is no roof on this house?
No.
Why?
The energy and wind took it off.

Libby: It shows the earthquake did more damage and is stonger because it did all of it’s damage in two lots.
So there were two cyclones?
No not two cyclones. One huge gust and then the eye was calm and then another gust of wind that did more damage?
What does the earthquake drawing show?
The big quake then the after shocks and the time in between and that they get smaller as it goes on.
What does this show down the bottom of the cyclone picture?
The gusts of wind that we’ve been having.

Does this show it’s the same?
Laura: No it shows one big earthquake then lots of different ones but the cyclone is big all the time.

Centine: It shows the cyclone is stronger than the earthquake cause the cyclone did a lot of damage but the earthquake didn’t do much
So the earthquake didn’t do much damage?
What does your picture of the EQ show?
It shows that the earthquake was big but the aftershocks were little but some were big.
What about the cyclone picture?
All the cyclone lasts long and it damages a lot of houses.
What do the dots show?
The rain
What do the lines show?
It shows where the earthquake powerlines were damaged and electricity was shut down.

Josh: It shows that The earthquake houses roof has split apart and fallen off
How does that relate to the energy
The energy shock so much that the roof couldn’t hold it anymore and it’s cracked and split in half.
Cyclone shows the energy and power of the cyclone has caused the roof to be lifted off the house it hasn’t just fallen

Diane: It shows that the cyclone has so much power it can lift a whole tree and house but the earthquake just has a few cracks in the ground and trees shaking.
Which is more powerful?
Cyclone
Why?
It has enough power to lift trees where as an earthquake can just shake trees.

Emily:A cyclone can pick up the roof of a house and a tree and the earthquake can tip over trees and put it on top of the roof.
So which if more powerful?
A cyclone
Why?
Cause picking up a roof of a house is more powerful than just tipping one over.

Molly: For the cyclone it is stronger than the earthquke cause it can pick up really heavy objects and move them. Earthquakes just wobble things and make cracks in the ground.
What can you tell me about the energy or power?
The strength of the earthquake is strong cause it can tip things over and make cracks but the cyclone has lots of power cause it can uproot trees and move them to different places with strong winds.
Is there a difference between the strength? You said an EQ is strong but a cyclone is powerful.
There is a difference but I don’t know how to explain it.
Is it to do with the energy?
M: the earthquake the energy comes from the ground but with a cyclone it comes from the weather and the weather has STRONG WINDS.

Mackenzie:I think the cyclone is more powerful cause it can lift things up and move them like the grand piano in someone’s backyard.
What about the earthquake?
The earthquake is still powerful cause the two plates in the ground rub together and it makes the ground shake and things fall off shelves and stuff.
What do the lines on your painting show?
The magnitude of the earthquake and how strong it is.
What about the other one?
Nothing
Do you know how cyclones are measured?
No
Why did you draw this then?
I know trees fell into houses and it was raining heaps and making the ground all wet.
So if you knew how to measure cyclones is that what you would have drawn?
Yes but I didn’t know.

Keanan: I think cyclones are stronger cause they can pick heavy stuff up but earthquakes just shake stuff and make cracks in roads.
What do you know about the power or strength of each?
Do you know where it comes from?
Under the ground in an earthquake.
What about a cyclone?
In the sky.

Cameron:It shows the difference between a cyclone and an earthquake.
Cyclones are in the air and earthquakes are in the ground.
Why did you draw a house?
To show the difference in what can happen between houses.
How does it show the power?
The wind coming through and blowing.
What causes the power?
The wind and speed.
What about the earthquake?
It depends on the magnitue.
So what causes the power?
A shockwave inside the ground that smacks together.
And..
When it smacks together the ground shakes.
Is this your house?
No it’s one in Rolleston though or somewhere where an earthquake has happened.

Travis; This one is the earthquake and this is the cyclone. The similar thing is they would both get cracks
What would?
The houses.
Why have you chosen such different colours? Why did you choose red for the cyclone? So the crack would stand out.
And the earthquake?
Don’t know.
Which do you think is stronger?
The cyclone.
Is that why it’s red
Yes
Why is it worse.
Cause heaps of rooves came off.
How did they come off?
The winds were so strong in the cyclone.

Grace: I think a cyclone is worse than an earthquake cause more stuff can break and fall down.
What can I see in your picture?
Bricks falling down in the cyclone and cracks.
What are the swirly lines for?
The wind.
So is the wind the same the whole tme?
Yes it ‘s the same.

Oliver: This is the road and what is looks like after the cyclone and the earthquake.
So what’s the difference?
The cyclone can rip trees off their stalks but with earthquakes the trees lean. Nothing much happens with the road in a cyclone but with an earthquake cracks go in the road.
Why is that?
I watched the news after the earthquake and there were children putting their legs inside the cracks.
How do the cracks get there?
Plates in the earth move and they help the earth with it’s balance and then if one of them moves or bends it creates a big earthquake.
why doesn’t that happen in a cyclone.
Cyclones suck things up and the earthquake shakes the whole earth and it makes damage to the thing it hits the most and it can actually split the earth
An earthquake split Australia and New Zealand.
So which is worse?
I think the earthquake.

Rania: This shows how big the earthquake has been.
So how big has it been.
in the first one it was a 7.1, then there were little ones that sometimes got bigger and it shows how big it got as the days went past. The cyclone shows how much damage was caused.
What do the circles show?
The eye of the cyclone
Why are there three?
Cause it can hit all different places.
What do you mean by that?
Instead of just hitting one city it could have hit lots of them.
So were there three cyclones?
Yes.
What are the dots?
The rain.
What about the power of the cyclone how have you shown that?
How much rain there is shows the power.

Emily:I wonder if the cyclone will go to Antarctica?
Flynn: No it can’t cause Antartica has a cyclonic front around it.

We want to look at tornados, earthquakes and volcanoes.
